Tactical use & trade-offs
Gets to the front court quickly, giving the opponent less time than a slow drop. More risk of hitting the net; works best when the opponent expects a smash.
Technique
| Grip | Forehand grip: shake hands with the handle, the V between thumb and index finger on the top-left bevel, fingers relaxed and slightly spread. Slightly more relaxed for a fine slice. |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Turn side-on early, racket arm cocked with the elbow at about shoulder height, non-racket arm pointing up toward the shuttle, weight on the back (right) foot. |
| Contact point | In front and to the right of the head. |
| Racket face | Angled so the strings slice across the base of the shuttle from right to left (forehand slice). |
| Swing | Smash-like swing that slices across the shuttle instead of hitting through it. |
| Body & footwork | Full rotation like a smash. |
| Follow-through | Follow through across the body; move forward to cover the net reply. |
Coaching cues
- Swing fast, slice the cork
- Steep, not floaty
Common errors
- Too much slice: shuttle tumbles into the net
- Slicing with a slow swing (loses deception)
Practice
On your own: Shadow smash-and-slice preparation; slow-motion slice racket path (2 × 10).
With a partner: Feeder lifts; hitter alternates straight slice drop and smash. Feeder/partner tries to read the shot.
Volume: 3 × 15 shuttles.
Safety
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain or unusual breathlessness.
