Tactical use & trade-offs
Draws the opponent forward and creates space at the back. A slow drop that rises too high is easy to kill. A drop that is too tight risks the net. Best when disguised like a clear or smash.
Technique
| Grip | Forehand grip: shake hands with the handle, the V between thumb and index finger on the top-left bevel, fingers relaxed and slightly spread. |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Turn side-on early, racket arm cocked with the elbow at about shoulder height, non-racket arm pointing up toward the shuttle, weight on the back (right) foot. Same preparation as the clear for disguise. |
| Contact point | In front of the body, slightly lower than the clear contact. |
| Racket face | Flat to slightly angled down; the swing slows just before contact. |
| Swing | Same arm action as a clear, but the racket decelerates and "guides" the shuttle; the grip stays relaxed. |
| Body & footwork | Normal rotation and weight transfer to avoid telegraphing the shot. |
| Follow-through | Short follow-through toward the target, then move forward: expect a net reply or lift. |
Coaching cues
- Same swing, soft hands
- Over the net and down
Common errors
- Slowing the whole body (obvious)
- Shuttle peaking high on your side (floats)
- Landing in the midcourt
Practice
On your own: Shadow the clear-and-drop preparation side by side (2 × 10 each) to keep them identical.
With a partner: Feeder lifts to the rear; hitter plays straight drops into a target zone. Count landings inside the front 1.5 m.
Volume: 3–4 × 15 shuttles.
Safety
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain or unusual breathlessness.
