Tactical use & trade-offs
Straight smashes reach the floor quickly and keep you on the same side to cover replies. Steepness matters more than raw speed. Smashing from deep behind the baseline loses angle; smashing too often can tire you and leave you out of position.
Technique
| Grip | Forehand grip: shake hands with the handle, the V between thumb and index finger on the top-left bevel, fingers relaxed and slightly spread. Relaxed until a firm squeeze at contact. |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Turn side-on early, racket arm cocked with the elbow at about shoulder height, non-racket arm pointing up toward the shuttle, weight on the back (right) foot. Get behind the shuttle. |
| Contact point | In front of the body, high, so the racket can point downward at contact. |
| Racket face | Angled downward toward the target. |
| Swing | Full throwing action with fast forearm pronation and a wrist snap from a relaxed grip. |
| Body & footwork | Strong hip and shoulder rotation; often a scissor kick or jump. Weight moves forward. |
| Follow-through | Racket finishes down across the body; recover forward quickly to cover a block to the net. |
Coaching cues
- In front, steep, down
- Loose then squeeze
- Smash and follow
Common errors
- Contact behind the head (smash goes flat or out)
- Tight grip throughout (slow racket)
- Not following in after the smash
Practice
On your own: Shadow smashes with full rotation (3 × 10), plus Rotational medicine-ball throws for power.
With a partner: Feeder lifts; hitter smashes straight to a target zone, follows in to kill the block return.
Volume: 3–4 × 10–12 shuttles (quality over volume: smashing is tiring on the shoulder).
Safety
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain or unusual breathlessness.
