Tactical use & trade-offs

Gets to the front court quickly, giving the opponent less time than a slow drop. More risk of hitting the net; works best when the opponent expects a smash.

Technique

GripForehand grip: shake hands with the handle, the V between thumb and index finger on the top-left bevel, fingers relaxed and slightly spread. Slightly more relaxed for a fine slice.
PreparationTurn side-on early, racket arm cocked with the elbow at about shoulder height, non-racket arm pointing up toward the shuttle, weight on the back (right) foot.
Contact pointIn front and to the right of the head.
Racket faceAngled so the strings slice across the base of the shuttle from right to left (forehand slice).
SwingSmash-like swing that slices across the shuttle instead of hitting through it.
Body & footworkFull rotation like a smash.
Follow-throughFollow through across the body; move forward to cover the net reply.

Practice

On your own: Shadow smash-and-slice preparation; slow-motion slice racket path (2 × 10).

With a partner: Feeder lifts; hitter alternates straight slice drop and smash. Feeder/partner tries to read the shot.

Volume: 3 × 15 shuttles.
