Closing Out a Game Under Pressure
Why players tighten up near the finish, and a plan that keeps you playing your game.

At 19–17 or 14–12, many players either rush or freeze. Both come from the same thing: thinking about the result instead of the next rally.
Keep doing what got you there
The patterns that won you the lead still work. Do not suddenly play safe lifts if you have been winning by attacking, and do not go for wild winners either.
Serve with a routine
Under pressure, serve errors creep in. Use the same preparation every time, slow your breathing, and serve to your most reliable target.
Choose high-percentage shots
- Aim a little further inside the lines.
- Attack shuttles that are clearly high; reset ones that are not.
- One rally at a time: the next point is the only one you can play.
With the new 3×15 scoring from 2027, games are shorter, so close-out moments come sooner and more often. Practising them matters even more.
Key takeaways
- Keep playing the patterns that built your lead.
- Serve with an unchanged routine.
- High-percentage shots, one rally at a time.
