What to Do Between Points
Those few seconds between rallies are free time to reset, plan and breathe. Use them.

Between rallies you get a few seconds. Most players spend them replaying the last mistake. Better players use a short, repeatable routine.
A simple four-step routine
- Let go: turn away, adjust your strings or grip. The last point is finished.
- Breathe: one slow breath out, longer than the breath in.
- Plan: one simple intention for the next rally, such as "serve low to the T, then racket up" or "long lifts to the backhand".
- Ready: step into position with the racket up.
Why it works
A routine gives your mind something useful to do instead of worrying. It also controls your tempo: you do not rush when nervous or drift when ahead.
The Laws do not allow you to delay play to recover, so keep the routine short.
Key takeaways
- Let go, breathe, plan one thing, get ready.
- Same routine every point: it controls tempo and nerves.
- Keep it short; play must be continuous.
