Tactical use & trade-offs
Shortest distance, so the opponent has little time, and it is lower risk than cross. Easy to anticipate if overused; it brings the smasher forward on the same side.
Technique
| Grip | Backhand grip: from the forehand grip, turn slightly and place the pad of the thumb flat on the wide back bevel (thumb grip). Relaxed until contact. / Forehand grip: shake hands with the handle, the V between thumb and index finger on the top-left bevel, fingers relaxed and slightly spread. |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Defensive stance with the racket in front. |
| Contact point | In front, to the side of the body. |
| Racket face | Square to the line, slightly open. |
| Swing | Firm, short block with soft absorption. |
| Body & footwork | Low and stable. |
| Follow-through | Minimal; ready for a net reply. |
