Tactical use & trade-offs
Converts tight shuttles into winners without touching the net. Low margin for error; a net shot is safer when in doubt.
Technique
| Grip | Panhandle / flat-face grip: racket face square to the net, thumb and fingers relaxed. Useful at the net and in fast exchanges. Slightly forehand or backhand depending on side. |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Racket up, approach with short steps. |
| Contact point | Just above the tape. |
| Racket face | Moving sideways across the shuttle, angled slightly down. |
| Swing | A short side-to-side brush, parallel to the net, rather than forward. |
| Body & footwork | Balanced lunge or small step. |
| Follow-through | Brush along the net line, not into it. |
Coaching cues
- Brush along the net, not through it
Common errors
- Forward swing into the net
- Brushing a shuttle that is below the tape
Practice
On your own: Shadow sideways brushes at the net (no shuttle).
With a partner: Feeder feeds tight shuttles just above the tape; player brushes or plays a net shot depending on height.
Volume: 3 × 12 shuttles.
Safety
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain or unusual breathlessness.
