Setup
Anywhere, racket in hand. A mirror helps.
Step by step
- Hold a relaxed forehand grip; check the V on the top-left bevel.
- On "back!", rotate to the backhand thumb grip; on "front!", back to forehand; on "flat!", panhandle.
- Partner or app calls randomly; aim for a change in under a second with a relaxed hand.
- Finish with 10 fast forehand–backhand switches in front of the body.
Success criteria
10 correct changes in a row without looking at the hand.
Common mistakes
- Squeezing the grip hard while changing
- Thumb not flat on the back bevel for backhand
Easier version
Make it a game: "Simon says forehand!" with colour stickers on the bevels.
Advanced version
Combine with fast wall drives that alternate sides.
Progression
When automatic, practise the switches during wall rallies.
Safety
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain or unusual breathlessness.
