Tactical use & trade-offs

Draws the opponent forward and creates space at the back. A slow drop that rises too high is easy to kill. A drop that is too tight risks the net. Best when disguised like a clear or smash.

Technique

GripForehand grip: shake hands with the handle, the V between thumb and index finger on the top-left bevel, fingers relaxed and slightly spread.
PreparationTurn side-on early, racket arm cocked with the elbow at about shoulder height, non-racket arm pointing up toward the shuttle, weight on the back (right) foot. Same preparation as the clear for disguise.
Contact pointIn front of the body, slightly lower than the clear contact.
Racket faceFlat to slightly angled down; the swing slows just before contact.
SwingSame arm action as a clear, but the racket decelerates and "guides" the shuttle; the grip stays relaxed.
Body & footworkNormal rotation and weight transfer to avoid telegraphing the shot.
Follow-throughShort follow-through toward the target, then move forward: expect a net reply or lift.

Practice

On your own: Shadow the clear-and-drop preparation side by side (2 × 10 each) to keep them identical.

With a partner: Feeder lifts to the rear; hitter plays straight drops into a target zone. Count landings inside the front 1.5 m.

Volume: 3–4 × 15 shuttles.
