Tactical use & trade-offs
Easier to control than a backhand clear and can be deceptive. Too slow or high and it is attacked at the net.
Technique
| Grip | Backhand grip: from the forehand grip, turn slightly and place the pad of the thumb flat on the wide back bevel (thumb grip). Relaxed until contact. |
|---|---|
| Preparation | As for the backhand clear. |
| Contact point | High, elbow leading. |
| Racket face | Flat to slightly sliced. |
| Swing | Same start as the backhand clear, but slow the racket and guide the shuttle. |
| Body & footwork | Weight on the right foot. |
| Follow-through | Short; recover quickly to base. |
Coaching cues
- Same preparation, softer finish
Common errors
- Floating mid-court
- Telegraphing with a slow preparation
Practice
On your own: Shadow backhand clear vs drop preparation.
With a partner: Feeder clears to the backhand rear; player alternates backhand clear and drop.
Volume: 3 × 12 shuttles.
Safety
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain or unusual breathlessness.
