Visualisation: Practise in Your Head

Mental rehearsal adds to physical practice. How to do it so it actually helps.

Visualisation (or imagery) means rehearsing skills and situations in your mind. It is widely used in sport as an extra to physical training, never a replacement.

Make it vivid

Use all your senses: the sound of the shuttle, the feel of the grip, the squeak of shoes, the lights. The more real it feels, the more useful it is.

See it from your own eyes

Picture yourself on court looking out, moving to the shuttle and playing the shot at real speed.

Rehearse what you want

  • Your best serve, landing on target.
  • Moving early to the rear corner and hitting cleanly.
  • Staying calm after a mistake and using your routine.

Keep it short and regular

Three to five minutes, a few times a week, and before matches. Pair it with real practice of the same skill.

Key takeaways

  • Vivid, first-person, real-speed images.
  • Rehearse success and calm responses.
  • Short and regular, always paired with real practice.
