Bouncing Back from Losses and Mistakes

Everyone loses. How to learn from it, let it go, and come back stronger.

Athlete resting and drinking water after a hard session

Every player, including world champions, loses often. Resilient players are not the ones who never lose; they are the ones who recover well.

Right after a loss

  • It is fine to feel disappointed. Give it some time before analysing.
  • Shake hands, thank your opponent, and look after your body (cool-down, drink, eat).

Later: learn

Ask three questions. What went well? What cost me points? What one thing will I practise? Write the answers down.

Separate performance from worth

A result describes one match, not who you are. Talk about yourself as someone who is learning and improving.

After a run of losses

Go back to basics, play some games you enjoy, and set small process goals. Confidence returns with evidence of progress.

If you are struggling: talk to someone you trust (a family member, friend, coach or teacher) or a doctor or mental-health professional. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number. To find a free, confidential helpline in your country, visit findahelpline.com ↗.

Key takeaways

  • Feel it, then learn from it with three questions.
  • A result is about one match, not about you.
  • Small process goals rebuild confidence.
