Serve, Return and the Third Shot in Doubles
The first three shots often decide who attacks. A practical plan for the serving pair.

In doubles, the serve, the return and the server's next shot (the "third shot") often decide which pair gets to attack. Plan them.
The serve
Serve mostly low and tight, the same way every time. Mix in an occasional flick serve to stop the receiver rushing forward.
Expect the return
Good receivers attack the serve with a net shot, a push to the midcourt, or a fast push to the back. As server, keep your racket up straight after serving and be ready to move forward.
The third shot
- Return to the net: reply with a tight net shot or kill if it rises.
- Push to the midcourt: your partner (behind you) drives or blocks it flat.
- Lift or flick to the back: your partner attacks; you take the net.
The aim of the third shot is simple: do not lift unless you must.
Key takeaways
- Serve low and consistent; flick occasionally.
- Racket up immediately after serving.
- Third shot goal: keep it flat or down, avoid lifting.
