Starting position
Ready position at base.
Movement sequence
- Split step and turn so your back faces the forehand sideline (right foot back).
- Chasse diagonally back toward the backhand rear corner.
- Hit overhead with the contact above or slightly left of the head; the left leg reaches out sideways to land.
- Absorb on the left leg and push back toward base.
Recovery
Push strongly off the left leg back to base. Recovery is longer here, so play a shot that buys time if needed.
Technique cues
- Turn early
- Land on the left, push back
Common mistakes
- Contact too far behind the head
- Landing with weight falling away from the court
Easier
Backhand rear-corner movement without the round-the-head stroke.
Harder
Round-the-head smash followed by a net shot.
Safety
- Requires good shoulder mobility; avoid if overhead reaching is painful.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain or unusual breathlessness.
