Shuttlecocks: buying guide
Feather vs nylon, speed numbers and which tube to buy for training, club play and tournaments.
ShuttleScience is independent: no brand pays to be listed. Prices and models change: always check the specifications on the product page before buying.
How to choose
Shuttles are the item you buy most often. Nylon shuttles last far longer and are ideal for beginners and practice; feather shuttles fly truer and are used in competition. Whatever you buy, match the speed to your hall's temperature and altitude.
- Feather vs nylon
- Nylon (synthetic skirt) is durable and cheaper per game; feather gives the authentic flight, steeper drop and better feel, but breaks sooner.
- Speed
- Speed numbers (e.g. 76–79, or colour bands on nylon) compensate for temperature and altitude. Colder or lower venues need a faster shuttle; hot or high-altitude venues need a slower one.
- Durability
- Higher grades use better feathers and last longer per tube, which often makes them cheaper per game.
- Approval
- For official tournaments use the grade the event specifies (often BWF-approved).
What to look for at each level
- Beginner: Nylon. A tube lasts many sessions.
- Intermediate: Nylon for drills, mid-grade feather for matches.
- Advanced: Mid to high-grade feather for matches; nylon or lower-grade feather for multi-feed drills.
- Professional: Tournament-grade feather, speed matched to the venue.

Tips
- Test the speed: a full underarm clear from the baseline should land between 530 mm and 990 mm short of the opposite back boundary line (BWF Laws, Appendix 1).
- Store feather shuttles in a slightly humid place; dry feathers break faster.
