Filming and Reviewing Your Own Matches

A phone and a simple checklist can show you what you cannot feel on court.

Wide view of a badminton match in an arena

Video shows you what you cannot feel while playing: late preparation, slow recovery or a pattern you repeat.

How to film

  • Place the phone behind the court, high if possible (on a bag or bench), so you see both halves.
  • Film full games, not just highlights.
  • Landscape mode, and check the battery and storage first.

What to look for

  1. How do I lose points? Tally errors, opponent winners, and weak shots that led to winners.
  2. Where do I recover to? Are you back at base before the opponent hits?
  3. Racket preparation: is your racket up in time?
  4. Patterns: do you always clear cross-court, or always lift straight?

Keep it positive

Pick one or two things to work on, not ten. Also note what went well: those are your strengths to build on.

Key takeaways

  • Film from behind and above; record whole games.
  • Tally how you lose points.
  • Choose one or two fixes, and note your strengths.
